Mariana Rola Pereira’s work explores themes of uprooting, longing and identity through techniques commonly associated with tradition and artisanal making. At the core of her practice lies a deep connection to her Portuguese cultural heritage, particularly through the Arraiolos embroidery. This technique, rooted in Portugal’s ornamental and artistic tradition, acts as a bridge for communication and expression; using material to create works that manifest as opportunities for understanding onself and the world. Objects that articulate space with intention and stablish relationships between traditional craftsmanship and the reinterpretation of thread and gesture, within a contemporary perspective.
Portuguese of Macanese origin with South American and Chinese roots, Mariana draws on her background in Landscape Architecture to observe and analyze her surroundings, constructing visual worlds that reflect her on going explorations and personal experiences through unique pieces.
Her creations are a continuously evolving process, functioning as an expansion of multiple languages and dialogues. Each work is an ode to a commitment to craftmanship and a connection with her creative process, with the aim of creating capsules of memory that funtion as mirrors for conceptual reflection.
